Is iPhone An Expensive iPod?
September 17th, 2007 by iPod Geek   Subscribe To Our FeedWith the introduction of the iPhone, the world anticipated Apple’s comeback into the handheld industry. Now that the iPhone has been released, everyone wants one.
But for the million international customers, it seems as if only America can benefit from the full features of this must-have, at least for now. What happens to the people from the rest of the world that have been saving up for an iPhone, anticipating its release? It looks like all they will get is a very expensive iPod.
Exclusive iPhone Contract
Everyone knows that the Apple has an exclusive contract with Cingular. Those countries that do not have access to Cingular may still purchase the iPhone. However, what is the iPhone without the use of the phone?
The same is true with its internet browsing options. Considering that it’s data network is based on AT&T’s Edge, web browsing with Safari cannot be access in countries not reached by AT&T’s services. In this case, iPhone enthusiasts from countries other than the United States might as well cross “unrestricted web access” out from the list of features they will be able to enjoy… or should they?
It has been told (by Steve Jobs himself) that the iPhone is not exclusively reliant on Edge for internet service. Although this is the only company that may provide internet data networks to iPhone users in America, broadband connection can still be used assuming that one has access to Wi-Fi hotspots. For this reason, iPhone fanatics from around the world can still make full use of its Mac OS X operating system and Safari web browser.
Unlike the issue with internet access, the problems with Cingular access cannot be overcome. The iPhone will continue to function without the use of the phone in other countries unless Apple gets the chance to address this. However, this fact is not stopping consumers around the world from purchasing this must-have. They will still be able to enjoy the multi-touch screen which can now only be seen with the iPhone.
This feature in itself will make the iPhone an ultra cool gadget to own, even if one cannot make calls. So for those who say that the iPhone will just be an expensive iPod to those who do not have Cingular access, you’re understating it a little bit. That iPod is coming with a 3.5-inch multi-touch screen, automated sensors, unrestricted web browsing, large internal memory, and a two mega pixel camera. Which MP3 comes with that?

Revamped iPods
September 8th, 2007 by iPod Geek   Subscribe To Our FeedLimitations of iPhone
September 7th, 2007 by iPod Geek   Subscribe To Our FeedBefore the iPhone was launched, there was already a very intensified anticipation. Positive reviews soon rolled out as soon as the iPhone was out in the market. iPhone has now become a must-have to those who can afford it and an ambition to those who can’t.
Although many reviews proclaim that all the attention towards is iPhone is well-deserved, it actually is still far from perfect.
Main Complaints
One of the major complaints regarding the iPhone has to do with the life of its battery. It is said that because of the complicated technical features of this gadget, the battery is easily drained. Many say that the battery used is second-rate and has a long way to go with further development. One way to get about it is to use a Apple iPhone - USB Data Transfer Sync Cable. This simply serve as a charger for iPhone.
Another major complaint is on the data network that it uses. The iPhone operates with AT&T’s Edge which is quite sluggish especially when compared with the present day’s highly developed networks. However, Apple claims that this should not prove to be a major drawback since the iPhone was designed to be notorious in receiving broadband connection through Wi-Fi hotspots. Furthermore, it is said that the iPhone is not open to third-party software developers.

More criticisms pile up as the iPhone’s absent features are scrutinized. With the increasing appreciation for 3G technology, it truly is surprising that the iPhone does not support it. MMS functions, even, are not provided. Even voice dialing or voice recording cannot be done with this handheld. In addition, when it comes to messaging, users would have to stick with traditional emails and SMS because it still does not have an instant messaging function.
Copy and paste functions are also absent. Going even further, it is difficult for its users to understand why such a multimedia device does not have a memory card slot. Although it is said that it should have sufficient built-in memory, users of other smart phones and mobiles of higher models believe in the convenience of external memory. Even its Bluetooth capabilities are limited as it does not support A2DP or even regular file transfers. Some minor complaints also include the lack of exclusive games and inability to set alert tones using MP3 files.
Although the iPhone may be one of, if not the best, handheld mobiles available in the market today, there is still a lot of space for improvement. However, this being the iPhone’s first model (excluding the Newton), we could only assume that the next one will be closer to perfect than we could ever imagine.

iPhone- Love and Hate Relationship With The iPhone
September 5th, 2007 by iPod Geek   Subscribe To Our FeedIf you’ve waited intensely for the release of the iPhone, then you’re simply one of the millions. Practically we’re all hit with the iPhone fever, because we’re enthralled by their so-called touch screen technology. But is this smart phone a true piece of eye candy or is it sugarcoated with too much exaggeration?
Let’s talk about the advantages of the iPhone. It has a very big screen, compared to any ordinary phones. This means that you can view text messages and images with clarity. Its colors are very sharp and very vivid.
I really don’t know how you’ll classify its touch screen system. Sometimes I find it fascinating really, since I don’t have to constantly bring the stylus or tire my fingers with the keypads. But since it’s a relatively new technology, this means constant practice is still needed. Nevertheless, finger pressing seems a lot of fun. In fact, there are already iPhone tricks that you can do.
iPhone allows everyone to connect to the Internet in a variety of ways. You can go for WiFi connection or utilize its EDGE technology. But if you’re previously using a 3G phone, iPhone may fall short as it’s only a dual-band phone; data transmission can be much slower. Its Safari web browser may not be at par with the one you have in your PC, yet it’s still very impressive. What other phone can allow you to look at web pages as they are?
The iPhone is also a true blue handheld video player that allows you to view TV shows, movies, and listen to music without any trouble. Of course, it also holds up to its very decent music player. But you can’t download music, and that’s a big hassle for anyone.
Phone functionalities are not compromised. In fact, you can now synchronize your address books so you can have your own one large database. You can select voice mail messages the same way you do for e-mails. So skip those unwanted phone calls. You may also synchronize your e-mails so you can receive messages in real time.
AT&T, its exclusive network carrier, doesn’t have any sufficient support when it comes to data network as well as for the lack of IMs and office applications. Handsets can get too warm when used constantly and the iPhone is very prone to smudges, requiring you to wipe it frequently.
One of the biggest iPhone drawbacks is its price, which is quite expensive at $599.
Is the iPhone worth to be loved or hated? Your guess is as good as mine.

AppleCare for iPhone
August 31st, 2007 by iPod Geek   Subscribe To Our FeedAny Mac user knows the benefits of having warranties as it can get quite taxing when it comes to servicing their Apple products. It is not only very expensive to replace parts if needed but also difficult to obtain service.
Apple has addressed this concern regarding the iPhone by providing a one-year warranty for hardware repairs and two years for technical support with each purchase. However, since the iPhone is not expected to be one of those smart phone frenzies that will easily be replaced by consumers, Apple now provides an AppleCare Protection Plan designed especially for it.
AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone
Before the iPhone was released on June 29, Apple admitted that AppleCare Protection Plan has not extended its service for the product but promised that it will be made available as soon as possible. Soon after the launch of the iPhone, Apple’s online store featured its AppleCare Protection Plan extended warranty.
The transferable service extension costs the owner an extra US$69 which should not be so surprising as it extends the hardware warranty to two years, covering possible expenses for any defects apart from those caused by accidents. This covers even iPhone accessories that are sold separately such as the Bluetooth Headset. For the lifetime of this warranty, service for your iPhone will be one phone call away whether or not it is used with a Mac. Because technical support is already available up to two years from the iPhone’s purchase, the AppleCare Protection Plan does not provide for its extension.
Apple claims that this service extension applies to battery replacements as well. This is very good news to all iPhone users as the battery is said to be one of the iPhone’s major shortcomings and replacement without the protection plan can cost the user almost US$20 more than the price of the AppleCare package itself.
How To Get This iPhone Protection Plan
iPhone users can purchase this AppleCare Protection plan anytime within one year of the handset purchase provided that they are not within the states of Alabama, Connecticut, Nevada, and Wyoming wherein sales of this insurance product is considered illegal. Purchasing the AppleCare package is strongly recommended as it really is a good price for the service and genuine replacement parts it promises.
Should You Get One?
Furthermore, it should really prove to be a good move considering that the iPhone is still early in Apple’s venture into the mobile phone industry. Although it has gone through careful and extensive testing, no one knows for sure how developed the iPhone really is. Surely, shelling out another US$69 should not feel so taxing if you know it will relieve you of your iPhone worries.

Reading through this manual will be valuable to some, while others will think they are reading a foreign language. Pictures are often included, as well for those who learn better by visualizing the mechanism.

The One-stop iPod Music Store - ITunes
August 28th, 2007 by iPod Geek   Subscribe To Our FeedThe store for your iPod music needs is, of course, iTunes. Apple has done a lot of things right, including having come up with brilliantly designed, innovative electronics. The company has also made the purchasing process simple and streamlined with iTunes, the online store for your iPod music needs. Using iTunes as your iPod music store is both cheap and convenient, and it allows you to create totally customized albums. If you want to mix rap, rock, classical, country, or world music, you can do so easily. By purchasing individual tracks, you can take your favorite songs from albums that may not be completely stellar and essentially create your own electronic mix tape. Because each song costs only $0.99 (which may or may not change at some point), it is quite competitive with the price of CDs. Given the fact that most CDs have 11 or 12 songs, it would only cost you approximately 11 or 12 dollars to download all the tracks from the average album. Occasionally, there are even exclusive songs, albums, or box sets available like a special downloadable U2 set in the past.
The Store with More
If there is one minor negative, it is that the songs are all in Apples proprietary AAC format. That means you can only play the songs on your iPod or on your computer. If you ever switch to another MP3 player from a different company, they become useless. However, the odds are good that once you have an iPod you probably won’t be interested in switching to anything else. Even though iTunes was initially created as an online store to service iPod customers’ music needs, the video iPod has created an additional market for downloadable content. The iTunes store now provides iPod users with easy access to many of the latest television programs and movies. Individual episodes are available for a few dollars each. However, the costs may vary depending on the show.
If you want to catch up on the latest episode of Desperate Housewives or Lost, you can. Season passes to some shows are also available as well. It is a good option for anyone who might be out of the country for a while if they have computer access and their iPod because it is much easier for someone to download a show than deal with shipping DVDs overseas. A season pass might even be a nice present.
