iPhone Review

Saturday, December 15th, 2007 by iPod Geek

Let’s talk about the iPhone. There’s no need for me to reiterate how many people are going crazy about this mighty smart phone. And why not? The recent release of iPhone promises a lot of things to its would-be users.

The iPhone is set to revolutionize mobile technology with the implementation of the touch screen interface. This means you don’t need to use any other device, such as a stylus or keypads. Applications run based on the touch of your fingers. Inasmuch as this is indeed beauty, people are more used to buttons, and the system used by iPhone will take getting used to.

The 3.5-inch widescreen with 160 dpi display is just fantastic. There’s a good mixture between the sharpness of the images, clarity, and vividness of their colors. This also strives to solve what is considered to be the common problem among average cell phones: you cannot simply read everything in one glance because letters are just too small.

Apple’s iPhone boasts of its Internet connectivity. It’s both WiFi and Bluetooth ready, which assures you that you can certainly connect anytime, anywhere. If there isn’t any wireless network, then you can use its EDGE technology. But you can’t be completely dependent on it. The phone’s only 2G. This means that iPhone may have limited data transmission. It’s the Web Safari that tries to compensate that. This innovative Web browser gives you a very unique experience when you’re surfing. You can view web pages as is, not any condensed or abbreviated versions.

E-mail messages can be checked, as long as it’s in HTML format. You can even opt to download them in real time by synchronizing both your e-mail and your iPhone. In a world where everything is fast paced and you don’t really have so much time to sit and surf, the iPhone is one of the best solutions available.

iPhone, however, is like an iPod. You can view your favorite movies, TV shows, and music and store them as your entertainment collection. Yet there’s a big BUT to it. The iPhone is still not yet capable to download media files directly from your Internet browser. You still need to download the files to your PC and then transfer them to your phone.

If you are in for the hassle, then go for it. But I’d say even average 3G phones can save you from that one. Moreover, since you’re downloading them from the Internet, where websites can be so unsecure, your phone is just as vulnerable as your computer to contain viruses, adware, and spyware. I’m still not sure if you can also run security programs into your phone. But if you want security, go to iTunes Store. They have extensive music collection which you can get for free or at a minimal fee.

I still wish, though, that Apple has been more lenient with regards to its carrier network. I wouldn’t say much about AT&T since I can clearly see their efforts of purchasing state-of-the-art facilities for the most comprehensive network coverage, but being locked in for two years seems too long.

What do you think?

iPhone in Europe

Thursday, December 6th, 2007 by iPod Geek

As you probably know, the latest innovation from Apple, the iPhone, is simply available to the United States. If you’re living in another country, you still have to purchase the phone online. Yet it isn’t even a guarantee that it can function, unless, of course, AT&T has coverage in your area.

However, latest buzz in Apple world is that iPhone has finally decided to soar higher and also learn to settle in other far-off places. In this year’s last quarter, Europe will be unveiling the presence of iPhone in its market.

The chief finance officer of Apple, Peter Oppenheimer, has confirmed the news, after the announcement of Apple’s third quarter results.

It’s all about Numbers
Apple, first of all, is banking on numbers. In the United States alone, around 270,000 phones were bought within 30 hours from the time it was up for sale. AT&T, through a statement issued by Tim Cook, Apple chief operating officer, has sold a lot more of iPhones in its first weekend compared to the number of wireless devices sold in a month in all of its history.

This is how Steve Jobs, the brain behind iPhone and chief executive officer of Apple, envisioned the iPhone: that it’s going to sell its first one million for iPhone before the end of fourth quarter—definitely faster than iPods, which sold its first million in Q7.

Effect on Apple’s Economy

To operate iPhone in Europe, Apple may require another kind of carrier network. The news, however, has started the war among wireless network giants in Europe. American Technology Research (AmTech) analysts believe that the battle against iPhone contracts in Europe can definitely increase considerable Apple’s stock to $165, from a mere $135. T-Mobile, O2, Orange, and Vodafone are all aggressively bidding, knowing how much success AT&T garnered with iPhone alone.

It’s possible that the companies can have their own separate contracts, according to nationality, yet AmTech believes that the ultimate strength of Apple will give the company the power to set the terms, like what it did to AT&T.

A Fight with Neonode
The iPhone may actually find itself finding head to head with one of Europe’s own iPhone: Swedish-developed Neonode. This phone basically looks like an iPhone with more perks. Users can do a lot of things through its screen and because it’s open platform, users can download extra programs that they want. This is one aspect that iPhone lacks. Second, Neonode is highly customizable. If iPhone is willing to set a new trend in Europe, it should gain inspiration from Neonode and learn to adapt.

Beg or Borrow An iPhone

Saturday, December 1st, 2007 by iPod Geek

If you have been drooling for an iPhone for a long time but do not have enough money, the only solution for you is to borrow an iPhone. You definitely have a friend or two who’ll be glad to allow you to use it for a short period of time.

But if you want him to let you borrow again, here are some things you must not do:

Don’t Use Its EDGE technology. If you don’t want your friend to frown or worse never permit you to use the iPhone again, avoid using the phone’s Internet browsing technology unless you are near any WiFi connection. EDGE system of AT&T is slow with regards to data transmission. You shouldn’t tell your friend about this; else, he might think that you’re only trying to criticize the phone.

Avoid checking e-mails. When you’re using somebody else’s property there’s the temptation of perusing another persons missives—in this case, e-mail accounts. If you press the Mail button found in the iPhone, you’re given immediate access to your friend’s e-mail messages from Gmail, Yahoo, as well as other accounts. Hotmail, fortunately, gives you no easy option.

Do not surf porn in the iPhone. Maybe for curiosity’s sake, you decided to browse a porn site utilizing the Safari web browser of the phone. You think you can get away with it, but think again. Like any other web browser found in your PC or notebook, Safari has its own History function that can make it very easy for your friend to check the sites you’ve visited. Surely, he’ll know what you did.

If you can’t stop it, however, make sure that you clear History and cache before returning the iPhone. You can do that by pressing on the Home button. Go to Settings, look for Safari, tap it, and scroll down. Tap on “Clear Cache” and “Clear History.”

Avoid smudging and sneezing. Before you ever lay your fingers on the iPhone, wipe your fingers ahead. The screen may be superb and shiny to look at, but don’t coat it with grease. Turn your back or cover your mouth when you’re about to sneeze. If you think finger prints are bad, a sneeze residue is far worse.

Read the manual. There’s a reason why it has a manual, and it’s opt to be read. So do that. Ask your friend to read through the manual before you decide to operate the iPhone. Just a few hints, though. Don’t place the iPhone in any external heat source to dry the phone. Also, avoid crushing, bending, puncturing, shredding, microwaving, painting, disassembling, or inserting any object into the iPhone.

If you can’t follow the above, you may be better off getting your own : )

Running OS Applications on iPhone

Saturday, November 3rd, 2007 by iPod Geek

The iPhone is considered to be the smartest phone ever created. Made by Apple, it combines such revolutionary technologies such as touch-screen interface, virtual keyboard, Internet connectivity, iPod, and basic phone functions.

But a lot of people are dissatisfied. This is because the iPhone is not open to other platforms, which makes it uncustomizable. You cannot install any other programs, or any open source applications.

Nevertheless, all hope is not lost, as latest development suggests that you can now create your third-party applications intended for your iPhone. This is viewed to be one of the most important hacking achievements.

Expect better applications on the iPhone
So how did someone do that? An anonymous hacker who has worked extensively with ARM processors developed a “Hello, World!” application and ran it in the iPhone.

It wasn’t long, however, before tools started to get better and more applications are produced. In just a span of a few days, the group called iPhone Dev Wiki has expanded their created applications by refining their build tools. This has given a lot of people the opportunity to develop their respective applications and run them in the iPhone. The tools are still in its early stages, yet a clever debugger is already in place, so everyone will just have to expect a lot of progress in the coming days.

With even such rudimentary tools, programmers can compile as well as run certain third-party programs, such as open source applications. This includes Python, Apache, and Dropbear SSH suite, among others. You may also get to compile some of your Unix favorites such as vim.

If you are interested with these kinds of hacks and would love to use them in your phone, all binaries and compilers of some of the mentioned programs can be obtained in iPhone Dev Wiki. Meanwhile, one cannot expect any graphical third-party software or even kernel alterations for the phone anytime soon. These things, however, require, more advanced kinds of tools.

The current breed of OS applications is a very big step forward. SSH along with the other tools can definitely pave the way to more decent capabilities. By building these applications, developers are gaining more knowledge and experience. Thus, we all just need to sit back, relax, and anticipate these number of applications to grow as the tool chain improves gradually.

iPhone Features

Monday, October 15th, 2007 by iPod Geek

Apple has a way of capturing people’s minds. For example, before iPhone found its way into the market, the company fed millions of users around the world with the many features the phone can do.

This includes:
- typing using a virtual keyboard,
- selecting voice messages,
- zooming in and out of photos, and
- surfing the Internet with the Safari web browser.

Despite the many features iPhone have, others are still digging deeper, hoping to discover a lot more interesting stuff—and they are successful. A system preference file has actually unveiled the many possibilities of using more widgets and applications for the iPhone. It’s just that one need to wait for another firmware upgrade before they can be unlocked.

This system preference file is known as the Default ApplicationState .plist. This contained not only a number of commonly used applications such as MobileiPod, Phonebook, and Weather, but also other interesting features such as Radio, Unit Converter, and Translation. These three are not currently offered by the iPhones sold today.

Everyone can simply deduce that the Translation widget may be for translating various texts in different languages and that the Unit Converter is simply a conversion application. However, what one should be excited about is the Radio. It has been a long time since iPod incorporated this feature into their unit. This function was recently introduced only with the release of the iPod’s remote accessory known as iPod Radio. Thus, the chances for Apple to integrate Radio to the iPhone may be quite slim.

All hope’s not gone, however, if you will rely on the system preference file. We can just simply look forward to the time when Apple will introduce mobile radio streaming on iPhones very soon. Another source of hope could be the mere fact that this is included in the firmware list. It may indicate that these programs or widgets will be unlocked following an update in the firmware.

In the meantime, iPhone is just relatively new. It hasn’t been like a month since people got hold of it and enjoyed and explored its capabilities. Nevertheless, one should not deny the fact that if Apple wants to maintain that edge over all other mobile carriers, it must constantly update its firmware and develop more built-in tools.

iPhone- The Must-Have Tech Gadget Of The Year

Friday, October 12th, 2007 by iPod Geek

Before its launch on June 19 of this year, millions of Apple fans were already awaiting impatiently for the iPhone release. Much publicity was given to this product that was anticipated to revolutionize the world of cell phones.

Although Apple initially only aim to sell around ten million units on its first year of release, it was said to have already sold close to three hundred thousand units within its first thirty hours in the market.

Is iPhone’s Publicity Well-Deserved?
If you ask me what makes the iPhone deserve such publicity, I would be very surprised. You do not have to be a big Apple fan or a gadget freak to appreciate this classy innovation. Whether you are an Apple fanatic, a techno geek, a multimedia player fan, a camera phone enthusiast, or whatever else you may be, the iPhone may be the product for you. Being an all-in-one gadget built with the latest and most innovative technology has made this phone the must-have of the year.

Apart from its sleek design that surpasses even the iPod, the iPhone’s multi-touch screen is its most admired element. Instead of sporting mechanical buttons just as any handheld mobile, it features a 3.5-inch touch screen layered with optical-quality glass. Because of this, it should be used with the touch of a finger and therefore, there is no need for a stylus. This screen also allows the use of several fingers for easier use of the gadget. All other mechanical buttons that has specific functions in other handheld are replaced with virtual buttons that can be easily manipulated when the screen is touched. This allows its user to scroll through menus, dial phones, compose SMS or email messages just by tapping on the displays.

If that is not enough to prove that its publicity is well-deserved, the iPhone uses Apple’s latest operating system called Mac OS X. Through this operating system, it enables its user to access the internet with the Safari web browser. Having this operating system enabled with this web browser, it allows its users to use the internet as one would with any other Apple desktop or laptop. This makes the iPhone very powerful especially as it is compared with the other smart phones in the market. No other smart phone available today has this functionality as all others provide limited operating systems and restricted web browsers. Because of this limited capacity, no other handheld can give its user the same web browsing experience as the iPhone does.

As more and more reviews are published everyday, the iPhone has actually earned much of its attention. The hype prior to its release is at a steady state now ,there is no doubt that people will continue to place orders throughout the rest of the year.

iPhone under threats of Hackers

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007 by iPod Geek

This news shouldn’t be surprising. For a long time, the latest in technology is often targeted by hackers. The iPhone is no exception. This is not helped by the fact that more than 3,000 security professionals and hackers has converged recently for the annual Black Hat Conference. And their goal? To detect one majority security imperfection in the iPhone.

Security Problems of iPhone
So how does the so-called iPhone hack works?

For one, hackers can trick the victims to visit a malicious website through their iPhone. From there, they can retrieve all important information about the phone users. Unscrupulous hackers can then utilize these data for illegitimate transactions. The worst part is, you wouldn’t know about it until it’s already too late.

However, Apple doesn’t want to simply take matters sitting down. They are currently developing a patch for iPhone. Should this really come to fruition, this will be considered the first software upgrade for the phone. Nevertheless, none of their representatives can ever explain if such patch will come just before the release of such findings.

You may ask, however, why should Apple handle security patches when other mobile phone manufacturers are giving this type of control to mobile carriers? This is because majority of the carriers are pretty slow in developing security patch devices, no matter even if they already know that there are bugs existing.

Exclusive iPhone patching by Apple provides two types of benefit: one, they can easily create a software that will correct the flaw, and second, who else does know the iPhone better than its manufacturers, right?

Should It Cause a Public Stir?
Should this latest technological glitch cause bother to iPhone users? Yes, it should, as it only means that what you may have is a weak system that can be penetrated by simply anyone, especially those who are highly knowledgeable in the process of hacking.

But it doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything to at least alleviate the potential problem:
Study your iPhone very carefully. A lot of mobile users seldom care in reading their instruction manuals. These are created because they contain instructions when problems arise. How to beat the hack may not be there, but if you have adequate knowledge of your iPhone, you can easily detect if something is amiss.

Make yourself constantly updated. Now that there are already initial findings available, you just need to brush up on the latest updates available about the security patch. Visit the iPhone website as often as possible. You can also contact their customer or technical support, or drop by the nearest Apple store within your area.

By keeping yourself updated, your iPhone will be less likely to fall prey to malicious hackers.

Geeky iPhone Details

Friday, September 28th, 2007 by iPod Geek

Many have heard of the iPhone’s special features. You may have seen the sleek design, know of the multi-touch screen that allows us to access everything with the use of our bare fingers and be well acquainted with the fact that its automated sensors do not only rotate the display according to the phone’s position but only save battery by automatically sensing that the phone is held up to the owner’s ear to make a call and so places the display on standby.

iPhones also automatically adjust the display’s brightness according to its visual needs as well. We also know that it runs with Apple’s latest Mac OS X operating system and that it is capable of unrestricted web access through Safari. Yes, we already know all that and that is enough to make us all want one.

However, there is so much more to the iPhone than all this. It advances the reputation of any other mobile or smart phone that has preceded it. When you get into the technical specifications of this sensational new gadget, you will understand.
iPhone Details
Yes, we have already said that we know of the innovative multi-touch screen that the iPhone possesses. But that’s not the only special thing about its display. The iPhone actually maintains one of the largest smart phone screens on the market with a 3.5-inch wide screen display running at 480 by 320 pixels at 160 dots per inch. Its users could not ask for more from a multi-touch screen display. Apart from this, it also has the most internal memory by far.

This is a courtesy of a 4 Gigabyte or 8 Gigabyte flash drive. Plus, even with this impressive internal memory size, it is still one of the thinnest smart phones available as it is only 11.6 millimeter thick. It also offers remarkable battery life with talk-time of up to 8 hours and up to 250 hours of standby time.

The iPhone’s 2 mega pixel camera has also been given quite remarkable reviews for the quality photos it is able to capture. Although it is strictly point and shoot, lacking zoom, flash, and video recording features, its digital quality still surpasses most of other camera phones available in the market today. Also, when it comes to connectivity options, it includes Wi-Fi at 802.11b/g, AT&T’s Edge, and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR which is thrice as fast as Bluetooth 1.1.

Apple admits that these features could be more impressive. Truly, there is still much further development for the iPhone. However, anyone who has been lucky enough to use or own one would agree that it provides so much more than expected of any first model. This is especially true for Apple whose core competency is not with handhelds… at least not yet.

Is iPhone An Expensive iPod?

Monday, September 17th, 2007 by iPod Geek

With the introduction of the iPhone, the world anticipated Apple’s comeback into the handheld industry. Now that the iPhone has been released, everyone wants one.

But for the million international customers, it seems as if only America can benefit from the full features of this must-have, at least for now. What happens to the people from the rest of the world that have been saving up for an iPhone, anticipating its release? It looks like all they will get is a very expensive iPod.

Exclusive iPhone Contract
Everyone knows that the Apple has an exclusive contract with Cingular. Those countries that do not have access to Cingular may still purchase the iPhone. However, what is the iPhone without the use of the phone?

The same is true with its internet browsing options. Considering that it’s data network is based on AT&T’s Edge, web browsing with Safari cannot be access in countries not reached by AT&T’s services. In this case, iPhone enthusiasts from countries other than the United States might as well cross “unrestricted web access” out from the list of features they will be able to enjoy… or should they?

It has been told (by Steve Jobs himself) that the iPhone is not exclusively reliant on Edge for internet service. Although this is the only company that may provide internet data networks to iPhone users in America, broadband connection can still be used assuming that one has access to Wi-Fi hotspots. For this reason, iPhone fanatics from around the world can still make full use of its Mac OS X operating system and Safari web browser.

Unlike the issue with internet access, the problems with Cingular access cannot be overcome. The iPhone will continue to function without the use of the phone in other countries unless Apple gets the chance to address this. However, this fact is not stopping consumers around the world from purchasing this must-have. They will still be able to enjoy the multi-touch screen which can now only be seen with the iPhone.

This feature in itself will make the iPhone an ultra cool gadget to own, even if one cannot make calls. So for those who say that the iPhone will just be an expensive iPod to those who do not have Cingular access, you’re understating it a little bit. That iPod is coming with a 3.5-inch multi-touch screen, automated sensors, unrestricted web browsing, large internal memory, and a two mega pixel camera. Which MP3 comes with that?

You can learn more about the iPhone with this iPhone Training DVD.
