iPhone- Zooming In and Out With OS X

Monday, July 30th, 2007 by iPod Geek

When news that iPhone will be loaded with Mac OS X, the iPhone mania intensified. It is like a dream come true for many Apple fans to have the best OS in a cell phone and MP3 player.

Disappointment Sets In
For those who do not already know, the Mac OS X is the same operating system found in all of the latest models of Apple computers. However, some disappointment aroused as soon as the fans realized that the iPhone does not contain the entire functionality of the operating system.
Surely, the expectation that this small gadget was going to feature the entirety of the Mac OS X seems a little bit absurd. The full operating system is surely too big to fit the iPhone’s 4GB or 8GB internal memory. What it has is a 500 MB version of the OS X that was specifically developed for the iPhone.

Compressed OS X
This compressed feature may leave one very skeptical of the iPhone OS. Truly, you will not get the core features of the Mac OS X user interface which includes the Finder, the Dock, the Desktop, and the Mouse Pointer, the iPhone is still a breeze to use.

In place of the desktop, the iPhone features a Grid Application Launch and a mini-version of the Dock. This mini-version will contain all necessary shortcuts to most commonly used applications such as the web browser, or the phone, etc. All the features are easily navigated through its multi-touch display.

Apart from these, iPhone OS X still provides so much more than any other smart phone despite its compression. While other smart phones provide limited web access, the iPhone allows unrestricted web access through its Safari web browser. Through this, the iPhone lets its user view web pages in their entire landscape form and then zoom in and out by tapping on the display.
Rich Features in iPhone
Furthermore, the iPhone also features a rich HTML email client that manages the user’s emails from POP3 or IMAP services and display images along with the text. The iPhone OS X also extends its features to navigational devices which contains  built-in Maps application and also supports Google Maps. Through this, maps and satellite images can easily be viewed and its user can also get information on direction and traffic flow.

In addition, like any other Mac running an OS X, the iPhone supports the use of Widgets or those small customizable applications that lets its users easily access information such as weather or stock reports. The iPhone OS X has even provided extra features such as a YouTube player that can easily be launched from its Grid Application Launcher. This way, YouTube videos can be access using the iPhone wherever and whenever.

In other words, the iPhone’s version of OS X includes all Mac OS X features that are applicable to mobile phones coupled with iPhone-specific features.

Make Your iPod Batter Last Longer (Part 2)

Saturday, July 28th, 2007 by iPod Geek

Listening to music all day on your iPod can be a great idea. With its large storage capacity, you can listen and relax to an almost endless supply of music. But what if the battery does not last as long?

Well here are some more tips to help your iPod battery last longer:
1. Always keep the battery at room temperature.
This is very important because if the battery is too hot or too cold, it will not be able to function at its full potential. Normal room temperature, about 20 degrees Celsius, provides the best atmosphere. Try to store the battery at this temperature before and during use.

2. Utilize the hold mechanism on your iPod.

This is a great function that helps your battery last longer. If you won’t be using your iPod for a while, turn it off and switch on the hold button. You will be saving some of your battery life by preventing your iPod from being accidentally turned on while on your pocket.

3. Wait for the battery to empty before recharging it.

This will guarantee a better and longer life for your battery. Often iPods use the battery even while in sleep mode, so the battery will drain when you are not using your device. The best time to charge your battery is when it is completely empty.

4. Put it in sleep mode when not in use.
To put your iPod in sleep mode, just hold the play button for several seconds. You can also use the pause button if you need to stop listening for a while. This will help prevent the battery from being wasted while you are not actually listening.

5. Watch how often you use the backlight.
This function is only necessary in dark areas, and can be altered to save power. Make sure that it is set to a low time or turned off the majority of the time. This backlight can quickly drain your power if it is on too often. The same thing applies to the equalizer. Turning these off will lengthen your battery life.

6. Reduce the use of the previous and next buttons
.
When you use these buttons, the hard drive needs to be opened, which uses a lot of your battery life.

By taking note of these tips you can prolong the life of your iPod’s battery and provide a more enjoyable music experience.

Increae Your iPod Battery Life

Friday, July 27th, 2007 by iPod Geek

To ensure that the lifespan of your iPod battery will last longer, here are some tips.

1. Update Firmware
It is important to note that you need to update your iPod firmware to the latest version. This has good things to offer with power management features for the battery. For instance, version 1.2 of iPod firmware has better power management features for the battery.

2. Adjust Your Backlight Settings
Make sure that the iPod backlight timer is always set at the minimum amount of time. If you set it to 3 seconds, after the iPod is inactive for 3 seconds, the backlight will turn off. This setting will help maintain a longer lifespan for the battery. You can also choose to switch off the backlight setting, which works well if you are always in brightly lit areas.

3. Adjust Your Brightness Control

For Apple iPod firmware versions 1.2 and higher, you can access the brightness control settings. To access this, just go to the main menu of the iPod, choose “Settings,” and then select “Brightness.” If you reduce the brightness, you can guarantee a longer battery life.If you are only listening to mp3 and will not be watching any videos on your iPod, you can reduce the brightness setting to about forty percent. This will save your battery.

4. Charge the battery
To prevent your Apple iPod battery from being strained, avoid frequent full discharges. Even though the battery has not emptied yet, you can recharge the battery. This is just to prevent the battery from being strained. You can also put your iPod in sleep mode if you won’t be using it. This will help prevent the battery from draining quickly.

5. Use Your iPod At OptimalTemperature
Exposure to high temperatures is a common reason why iPod batteries have shorter lives. Make sure to avoid exposing the battery to the heat of the sun for a long time. Keep the battery cool and at normal room temperature. Avoid using the battery when it is too hot, and allow it to cool down before continuing use of the iPod.

6. Avoid Changing Tracks Frequently
Apple iPods and other mp3 players use the same kind of technology as a computer. This means if you frequently change tracks on your iPod, it will need to access the internal hard disk more often. When the hard disk is being accessed continuously, the player has to work harder, shortening the life of the battery.

Give these tips a try, you will be surprised at the lifespan of your iPod battery from now on.

My iPhone Review

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007 by iPod Geek

Even with the many in-depth online reviews on the iPhone, they could not prepare me well for my first encounter with the iPhone.

I was immediately awe struck by the slim design of the phone. It is about half the thickness of the Sony Ericsson P990i or the Nokia N95. With the 3.5 inch touch sensitive screen, the large display screen was impressive even at 50% brightness.

Of course, you don’t use a stylus on the iPhone. You pinch, peck and stretch using your fingers. Despite the heavy duty fingering, I have found that the touch screen remain fairly clean. Unless you press hard, there shouldn’t be any smudges. But if you are concerned about this, get the Nextware Screen Protector for your iPhone.

The iPhone is perfect alternative for cell phones. With easy to use and intuitive menus, anyone can use the iPhone immediately. The only thing you may need to get used to is to use the one and only button located at the bottom to go back and forth from the current page to the central menu.

The iPhone uses an on-screen key board which looked intimidating at first but you should have no problem getting used to it.

The camera is a 2 megapixel. Unfortunately, it cannot shoot videos or record audios although it can play videos.

These should be minor issues and hopefully Apple will address them in the future.
